Deck Stairs Repair and Replacement

Stairs take the most weather and the most wear of any part of a deck. When treads go soft or stringers start to rot at the bottom, we rebuild the stairs on a solid footing with treads, risers and handrails that match your deck.

Deck stairs

How we approach deck stairs

The bottom of a stair is where water sits longest, so stringers often rot where they meet the ground or a concrete pad. Treads cup and split, nails pop, and handrails loosen. A stair that flexes or wobbles is one of the most common injury risks around a house.

We build new stairs on a concrete pad or footing so the stringers never touch soil, use pressure-treated stringers spaced for your tread material, and finish them in the same boards as the deck. Every stair gets a graspable handrail and guards where the code requires them, and riser lights if you want them.

Short stairs off a ground-level deck usually take a day or two. Long stairs from a second-story deck, especially with a landing, take longer and may need a permit along with the deck.

FAQ

Deck stairs: common questions

Can you replace just the treads?
Yes, if the stringers are solid. If the stringers are soft at the bottom, we replace them too so the new treads have something solid to fasten to.
Do deck stairs need a handrail?
Stairs with four or more risers generally need a graspable handrail, and open sides above about 30 inches need guards. We build to your city’s rules.
What goes under the bottom of the stairs?
A concrete pad or footing, so the stringers sit above the ground and stay dry. Stringers set on soil are the most common cause of stair rot.
Can you add a landing?
Yes. Long stairs often need a landing, and it can make stairs safer and easier to use. We include it in the plan and the permit when needed.
