Deck Railing Installation and Replacement

A wobbly or rotted railing is a safety problem, and an outdated one can make a whole deck look tired. We replace railings on existing decks and build new ones that meet today’s height and spacing rules.

Deck railings

How we approach deck railings

Most railing failures start at the posts. Posts notched and nailed to the rim joist, or bolted without blocking behind them, loosen a little every year until the whole section moves. When we replace a railing we fix the post connections first, with blocking and structural fasteners, so the new rail stays tight.

Style is your call. Wood and composite railings match a traditional deck and cost the least. Black or white aluminum is our most popular choice: slim, strong, and never needs paint. Cable and glass keep the view open on decks facing water or mountains and cost more per foot.

Code requires guards on decks more than 30 inches above grade, typically 36 inches tall with openings small enough that a 4-inch ball cannot pass. Stair railings need a graspable handrail. We build to those rules and to your city’s requirements.

FAQ

Deck railings: common questions

How tall does a deck railing need to be?
Guards are typically required on decks more than 30 inches above the ground and are usually 36 inches tall on homes, with openings smaller than 4 inches. We confirm your city’s rules before building.
Can you replace just the railing and keep my deck?
Yes. Railing-only replacement is common. We check and reinforce the post connections so the new railing is solid.
Which railing needs the least maintenance?
Aluminum, cable and glass need only occasional washing. Composite needs a rinse. Wood needs staining every few years.
Do you add lighting to railings?
Yes, post-cap, under-rail and stair-riser lights can be added during installation for a modest extra cost.
