Garage Door Jamb and Trim Repair

Garage door jambs sit right where rain, splash and snowmelt hit, and they are one of the first places wood rots on a house. We replace rotted jambs and trim, fix any framing behind them, and flash and seal it so it lasts.

Garage door trim repair

How we approach garage door trim repair

The bottom foot of a garage door jamb takes water from the driveway, the door seal and the roof drip above. Paint fails, the end grain soaks up water, and the jamb, the trim and sometimes the king stud behind them start to rot. Weather stripping stops sealing and the door leaks.

We remove the rotted jamb and trim, check the framing and replace soft studs or header sections, then install new jambs and trim in PVC or primed, rot-resistant wood. Bottom ends are kept off the concrete and sealed, the head gets drip flashing, and new weather stripping is fitted to the door.

Garage door trim is often done along with entry door and window trim repairs, which keeps the cost per opening down. If the siding around the opening is soft, we repair that too.

FAQ

Garage door trim repair: common questions

Why do garage door jambs rot so often?
They sit close to the ground and take water from the driveway, the door and the roof above. Once paint fails, the end grain soaks up water quickly.
What material lasts longest for garage door trim?
PVC trim does not rot and holds paint well. Primed, treated wood also works if the ends are sealed and kept off the concrete.
Do I need to replace my garage door too?
No. We work around your existing door and adjust the weather stripping. If you plan a new door, it is a good time to do the trim.
Can you fix the siding around the garage door?
Yes. Rot often spreads into the siding next to the jamb, and we repair it in the same visit.
