Porch Column and Post Repair

Porch columns rot from the bottom up, where water sits on the base, and from the top down, where the beam above leaks into them. We shore the porch roof, replace the column on a raised base and wrap it in material that will not rot again.

Porch column repair

How we approach porch column repair

Most rotted porch columns we see were installed sitting flat on concrete or a deck, with no gap for water to drain. Hollow wood columns also trap moisture inside. The rot often starts hidden behind paint or a decorative wrap, and by the time the base looks soft the post inside can be badly weakened.

We support the porch roof or balcony with temporary posts, remove the old column, and check the beam and footing. The new structural post goes on a raised galvanized base, and we finish it with a PVC or primed wood wrap, a vented base trim and flashing at the top so the beam above sheds water instead of feeding the column.

If the beam or header above is also rotted, we repair it at the same time. Tapered and decorative columns can be matched with fiberglass or PVC columns that look like the originals but do not rot.

FAQ

Porch column repair: common questions

Can a rotted porch column be repaired instead of replaced?
If the rot is only at the base and the post above is solid, we can cut it out and add a raised base. If the post is soft higher up, replacement is safer.
Is a rotted porch column dangerous?
It can be. Columns carry the porch roof or balcony above. If a column is soft, cracked or out of plumb, have it checked soon.
What columns last longest?
A pressure-treated structural post on a raised metal base, wrapped in PVC or fiberglass. The wrap never rots and the post stays dry.
Can you match my old decorative columns?
Usually. We can source fiberglass or PVC columns in tapered, round and square styles that match the originals.
