Cedar Siding Repair and Replacement

Cedar is beautiful and it can last decades, but only if water is kept out from behind it. We replace rotted cedar boards and shingles, match the profile you have, and fix the flashing and sheathing that let the water in.

Cedar siding repair

How we approach cedar siding repair

Cedar usually fails in the same few places: the bottom courses near the ground or a roof line, under windows, behind downspouts and wherever paint or stain has been let go. The board itself often looks fine from a distance while the back side and the sheathing behind it are soft.

We open the damaged area, cut back to sound wood and replace sheathing or framing where needed. Then we patch in new cedar matched to your profile and exposure, whether that is bevel lap, channel, tongue and groove, shingles or board and batten, and prime every cut end and back side before it goes up.

If the damage is spread across a whole wall, we will show you the numbers for re-siding that wall in cedar versus switching to Hardie or LP SmartSide with a matching look. Many Seattle and Eastside homeowners keep cedar on the front and switch the hard-weather sides.

“Gave an honest and reasonable quote. Restored water damaged siding, looks great. Alex was responsive and gave me a quote for replacing the whole house too, but I opted to wait and just fix the damaged spot. He worked around our window and hvac with no issue.”

FAQ

Cedar siding repair: common questions

Can you match my existing cedar siding?
In most cases, yes. Common bevel, channel and shingle profiles are still available, and we can mill or rip boards to match older sizes.
Should I replace cedar with Hardie?
Not necessarily. If the damage is local, a cedar repair keeps the look and costs less. If a whole wall is failing, Hardie or LP with a cedar-look profile is lower maintenance.
Why does cedar rot if it is rot-resistant?
Cedar resists decay but is not immune. Constant moisture from missing flashing, ground contact or failed paint will rot it, especially on the back side.
How often should cedar siding be painted or stained?
Painted cedar usually needs repainting every 7 to 10 years, stained cedar every 3 to 5 years, more often on south and west walls.
