Deck waterproofing details that prevent wood decay

A deck can look finished while still allowing water into vulnerable areas. Ledger boards, posts, rail penetrations, stair connections, door thresholds, and waterproofing transitions all need to shed water correctly. When these details fail, the deck surface may hide moisture that reaches joists, sheathing, framing, or siding. Regular inspection is especially important after wet seasons. If you see soft boards, staining below the deck, swelling near doors, or water marks at transitions, the waterproofing detail should be evaluated before decay spreads into structural wood.
